These are some suggestions that have helped me:

DO'S

DO Look up the symptoms of Depression.  This will help you distinguish what behaviors you can expect..
DO Have the depressed person get a complete medical exam, thyroid  function, hormone levels, Lymes disease, ect. (A lot of medical problems mimic Depression.)
DO Take some time, each week, and do some thing you enjoy.   Give yourself a little break.
DO Take some time, each week, and do some thing together.   Go on a date.
DO Encourage the depressed person to persue something they enjoy. Wood working, painting, writing, anything they can do when they feel up to it.
DO Help to eliminate stressors.

DON'TS

DON'T  Be discouraging, even though it may seem silly to you. If it gives pleasure, go along with it.
DON'T Use guilt. Remember this is a medical problem, they can't just "Snap out of it".
DON'T Be nosy. Everyone needs a personal life.
